TUNISIA · NORTH AFRICA
Where Rome, the Sahara and the sea meet.
Roman cities, walled medinas, the Star Wars deserts of the south and the island of Djerba. Day trips and desert tours, from Carthage to the dunes.
Only in Tunisia
Three days you can only have here.
Beaches and souks turn up all over the Mediterranean. These three belong to Tunisia alone — a Roman arena you can walk into, the Sahara film sets that became Tatooine, and a blue-and-white village above the city Rome tried to erase. Build the rest of the trip around them.
The deep south
Sleep where Star Wars was shot
George Lucas built Tatooine out of the Tunisian Sahara, and most of it is still standing. You can sleep in Luke's underground homestead at Matmata, walk the Mos Espa film set on the edge of the dunes near Nefta, and bed down under canvas at Ksar Ghilane after a day on camelback. The desert tours run down through Berber villages and the Chott el Jerid salt flats to get there.

Roman Africa
Stand inside a Roman colosseum
El Jem's amphitheatre is one of the largest the Romans ever built and one of the best preserved anywhere — bigger than the small town that grew up around it. You walk the arena floor and drop into the gladiator cells beneath it, with barely a crowd. Most day trips pair it with Kairouan, the fourth-holiest city in Islam and the oldest mosque in North Africa.

Above the ruins
The blue-and-white village over Carthage
Sidi Bou Said spills down a clifftop above the sea in cobalt-blue doors and whitewashed walls, jasmine on every corner and mint tea at the Café des Nattes. Just below sit the ruins of Carthage — the Punic sea-power Rome spent three wars erasing — and a short hop away, the Bardo holds the richest collection of Roman mosaics on earth.

If your week in Tunisia comes down to a single day out, make it this one. The trip travellers keep coming back to rave about.
The favourites
Tunisia's Most Popular Tours
Carthage, the Sahara, El Jem and Sidi Bou Said. The trips most travellers come to Tunisia for.
The big one
How to do the Sahara.
The desert is a two-day round trip from the coast — Roman ruins and Berber villages on the way down, a camel ride and a night under canvas at the far end. Mostly it comes down to where you set off from.
By region
Pick a corner of Tunisia.
Each one is its own trip. Tunis for the medina and the mosaics. Carthage for the ruins and the blue village. The Sahara for the dunes. Sousse and Djerba for the Mediterranean.
By experience
Or pick the kind of day you want.
Desert tours if you came for the dunes. The medinas if you want the souks. Roman sites if you came for the history. Camel rides, museums, cycling and the coast for everything in between.
Old towns and souks
Lose a day in the medina.
Tunis behind its medieval gates, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said on the cliffs above, the Bardo’s Roman mosaics in between. Three guided days we’d hand a first-timer.
On the water
The Mediterranean side.
Djerba’s whitewashed lanes and flamingo flats, the walled medina at Sousse, the marina and beaches at Hammamet. If you’d rather slow down by the sea, start with these three.
